Y’know when you stumble across a little piece of internet gold and you are just like ‘thank Christ’?
Jamie Groovement is one of those people. A hip hop DJ and promoter based in Mancheseter, Jamie’s podcasts are very funny….lots of shout outs and it sounds like he has a funny time with his guests. More info here.
I can’t even remember how I came across the podcast but now I can follow Mr Groovement on the twitterz where he recently linked to this awesome list of (100!!) beat/instrumental tapes for 2011.
Now, I don’t have time to listen to all 100 (at the moment) but I’ve clicked on 5 and they are ALL good.
Ta-ku, Elaquent & Bahwee in particular.
The explanation for my particular leaning towards UK based hiphop/beats stems from time spent in London working in a comms agency (full of boys) who completely monopolised the studio soundsystem…and so this is how I came across Rae & Christian, Coldcut, AIM, Grand Central, Fat City, Friends & Family, The Nextmen, Roots Manuva, Ty, Notting Hill Carnival, The Roadhouse in Manchester etc etc. Living in Hackney and Brixton kind of cemented it.
These days I live in the ‘burbs of Melbourne, I have two smalls, I don’t have access to this type of music in my ‘everyday life’…erm…it’s not really part of the scene down at the playground!
So…thanks Mr Groovement for bringing me up to speed. The music is not necessarily UK based but it’s the English accented chatter over the top that works for me. I do think there is a particular ‘sound’ though….I just can’t describe it. (The sound of my youth maybe?)
